Sr. Director, Girl & Outdoor Program

POSITION SUMMARY:   Responsible for providing oversight and leadership of the Program Team and Outdoor Program team as they work to reach, serve, and support all girls within the council.  Responsible for providing leadership and vision setting for the development of innovative strategies and effective service for directing membership development in all areas of the council, and council programs.  The Senior Director works in partnership with other operational and organizational functions to support the organizational mission, goals, and strategic priorities, including sitting on the Council Strategy Team, Senior Leadership Team, and Co-leading the Program Leadership Team.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

1. Provides oversight, leadership and management to the Girl Program and Outdoor Program team. Ensures the team complies with and supports the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) and the council policies, procedures, standards, and business practices. Provides clear and consistent accountabilities and direction to staff teams, ensuring that ongoing coaching, feedback, and staff development is managed, resulting in a high-functioning team.

2. Oversees and supports the Senior Outdoor Program Manager to deliver strong year-round outdoor program and summer camp. Provides vision, direction, and guidance to staff in determining and developing innovative and inclusive strategies throughout the Council this includes leading and providing guidance to the cross functional teams, including the Council Strategy Team, Senior Leadership Team, and the Program Leadership Team.

3. Analyze community needs, demographic data, and membership statistics.  Design and implement innovative approaches to outreach recruitment and determine the need for additional council services in collaborative programs as appropriate to meet the needs of the council.

4. Ensure partnership with other council teams to support, design and help execute the program.

5. Co-lead of the Program Leadership Container.

6. Member of the Council Strategy Team and Senior Leadership Team.

7. Cultivate the interest and support of key community leaders, family members, institutions, and business organizations.  Interpret and promote Girl Scouting to the community.

8. Oversee, develop and administer annual operating budgets to ensure quality services are provided.  Work with fund development department to identify grant and funding opportunities; assist in grant application and evaluation process.

9. Work with the Product Program, GS Social Impact, Multi-Cultural Services and Fund Development departments to build collaborative relationships with community organizations, agencies and businesses to ensure support for local program efforts.

10. Oversee and ensure girl and adult safety through education and promotion of safe practices and consistent interpretation of GSUSA and GSACPC policies, standards, and procedures.

11. Support council functions through promotion of council-sponsored activities, meetings, and volunteer opportunities. Promote the Girl Scout culture of philanthropy by cultivating and building relationships with donors.

12. Active participation in the development of environments that foster diversity, equity, inclusion, and access through words, actions, and attitude.

13. Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.

 

 Education and Experience:

  • Solid leadership and management skills in youth programs with a focus on outdoor program and risk mitigation, as well as demonstrated nonprofit experience and dedication and support for multicultural programing.
  • A minimum of 10 or more years’ experience in youth development roles, including at least seven consecutive years of managerial experience.
  • Ability to set vision and direction for a large team and to work cross functionally.
  • Strong experience with managing community partnerships.
  • Must have demonstrable experience and be aligned with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) values, culturally sensitive, and effectively convey the Council's message among diverse communities, including non-native speakers of English.

Excellent written and oral communications including public speaking.

Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, spreadsheets, Outlook.  Experience with database systems, such as Salesforce, preferred.

Demonstrated ability to oversee and manage multiple teams while meeting deadlines, taking initiative, and maintaining confidentiality.

 

 Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Travel throughout council jurisdiction up to 20% of the time.
  • Capability to provide own transportation and maintain valid operator license. 

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must be able to withstand:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Operate office equipment manually.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds at times.
